Commuter problems should be reduced by a massive new revamp of Victoria Station.
No one likes a battle for the train doors, elbow jabbing or eyeballing the impatient commuter who just won’t behave. It’s a fact of life in the big city. It would be nicer if there was a bit more space on platforms so that this kind of thing didn’t have to happen but, oh wait…
News that might see a little bit less of this kind of behaviour on your next weekend trip to the Southeast has dropped. That news being that Victoria Station has been scheduled for a £30 million revamp over the winter that will alleviate issues with congestion on platforms and ticket gates, as well as a couple of other bonuses.
The good news is that the work is scheduled to be done by March 2024 – just in time for those springtime trips down to Brighton.
What’s Changing?
Most of the work is being done to add 37 new ticket gates to platforms throughout the station, as well as eight more accessible gates. These should do the job of minimising the crowds of people that get caught up leaving and entering the platforms, meaning less waiting time for you.
Having people getting in and out of those gates also means that trains will be better able to run on time so it’s a win-win all round.
The works will mean that the Upper Crust will have to go (sorry to say goodbye to the sandwiches) but several new retail units will be put in place elsewhere in the station. The Gatwick Express ticket office will also be moved so that they can squeeze more shops in.
Looks like we’ll have plenty to peruse with that extra waiting time we’ll have saved then…
