Euston Station is Getting a £2.25bn Revamp… Here’s What You Need to Know

Euston Station is getting a mega revamp. And photographs of the £2.25bn redevelopment have just been released.

London’s most chaotic station is getting a makeover. Prospective photographs of Euston station’s mega redevelopment have been released by the architects behind the project. And we have to say, it looks pretty cool.

The photographs depict the planned style of a redevelopment that will cost £2.25bn and redesign the entire station from scratch, including all the existing platforms, and make room for the very controversial HS2 high-speed rail.

Here’s what you should know.

The Master Plan

Euston Station Redevelopment

This has been on the cards for a while – work on the redevelopment began in 2017 with the demolition of existing buildings that will run until 2026. Phase two will then begin with the construction of a new station aiming to be completed in 2033… Though these things rarely finish on time.

The pictures show a light and airy station which undeniably looks much more modern than the current one. The plans reflect that, tackling a few issues with the current design.

Commuters rejoice! The trudge from the station to Euston Square tube station will be better linked, as will access to taxis and buses. The cramped ticket hall will be expanded to fit the actual usage the station gets.

And the underground itself will also get a revamp, better linking the routes between the existing lines and making the station above more accessible from the tube.

About the Revamp

Euston Station Redevelopment

Euston Station currently serves 40 million passengers a year, twice as many as was intended, so the redevelopment will add ten more platforms to ease that stress. The original plans were for 11 platforms, but one was scrapped at the cost of £105.6m in sunk investment.

Overall the project will create 2,000 jobs, provide new office space above the station, and an estimated 4,000 new houses in the redevelopment areas.

This could be a good thing for London – and the UK – if it goes well. Though, it’s hard not to look at the issues that have plagued the rest of the HS2 project and not feel sceptical about how this will turn out.

… And current users of Euston station must be wondering why all this fuss, when the biggest cause of their travel woes is the state of Avanti’s train services. Yikes.
