Major London galleries running a late series for the return of Art After Dark.
Art enthusiasts will be excited to hear news of the return of Art After Dark – the calendar event for late-night exhibition hopping. Running on June 29th and 30th the event sees The National Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts opening until 9pm (8pm on the 29th).
Art After Dark: What to Have on Your Radar
Alongside that you’ll also be able to take a late-night jaunt through some top West End galleries where there’s going to be smaller, more contemporary exhibitions on display.
Also in the lineup is the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery where you can check out the usually-paid-for exhibition Yevonde: Life and Colour entirely free.
Art After Dark isn’t just an indoor affair. There’s also plenty of public art to be enjoyed out and about.
Top of our list of things to see on the night is the Piccadilly Circus getting a green makeover at the hands of light-artist Amelia Kosminsky who’s taking over the big screens and giving the Eros Statue a touch up.
Those are the major bits, but there’s much to explore in the independent galleries around Mayfair and St James’. Here’s a few highlights. For the full list of Art After Dark galleries, check their website here.
Stern Pissarro Gallery
The Stern Pissarro Gallery is showing an exhibition of works on paper that contains some notable artists’ work, you’ll want to feast your eyes upon. That list includes sketches by none other than Picasso.
He’s joined in the star studded lineup by Mattise and Chagall. While this show won’t be as dramatic as some of the things on display at the bigger galleries, there’s no doubt a certain charm to seeing a great artist’s hand at work on a smaller scale.
Saatchi Yates
The Satchi Yates gallery is opening for their new exhibition Bathers – that’s a summer time romp through the history of art depicting people in the act of bathing.
It ranges from the ultra current with works by Damien Hirst and David Hockney, to way back into the past for works by Turner and Belgian master Denijs van Alsloot.
3812 Gallery
Contemporary Chinese is on display for late-night viewing at 3812 Gallery where you can check out the UK’s first solo show of Chinese up-and-comer Qian Wu. Black and Blue contains a multitude of images that hit an interesting line between Western and Eastern techniques.
The guy studied art in America, following in the footsteps of the Abstract Expressionists but retains a lot of influence from China’s art history too. They’re genuinely very stunning to look at.
